
NPORS Plant Machinery Marshal (N133)
The NPORS Plant Machinery Marshal (N133) course is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely guide and manage plant machinery on construction and industrial sites. Here’s a breakdown of the typical course content:
Course Objectives & Content
Participants will learn to:
- Understand the roles and responsibilities of a plant marshal.
- Gain a basic understanding of the industry, relevant legislation (e.g. Health and Safety at Work Act 1974), and the dangers associated with plant operations.
- Interpret and use approved hand signals and other forms of communication effectively.
- Conduct pre-operational safety checks, including stop blocks and tipping areas.
- Set up exclusion zones for safe loading and unloading.
- Guide plant machinery in forward and reverse directions, including in confined spaces and blind spots.
- Understand and apply environmental considerations.
- Identify and use appropriate PPE.
- Follow end-of-shift shutdown and parking procedures.
Assessment & Certification
Theory Assessment: Open questions and multiple-choice.
Practical Assessment: Demonstration of marshalling skills.
Certification depends on whether the participant holds an (S)NVQ:
Trained Operator Card (valid for 2 years) if no (S)NVQ is held.
Competent Operator Card (valid for 5 years) if the relevant (S)NVQ is held.

Entry Requirements
Must have passed the CITB Health, Safety & Environment test within the last 2 years.
Good understanding of spoken and written English.
